Barb Herbert (née Hetherington)
November 12, 1956 – June 5, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Barb Herbert on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in the backyard of her Sylvan Lake home—her sanctuary and her pride and joy.
Barb was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and raised on the family farm, where she developed a love of nature, hard work, and determination. Some may say she was a little stubborn. Barb was a wild child at heart, and you never knew what adventure or project she would embark on next. She made Sylvan Lake her home for over 30 years, cherishing her yard and long walks with her pets.
Barb was a knowledgeable and dedicated bookkeeper who worked tirelessly for her clients until her retirement in 2023. It was routine for her to be up at 5:00 a.m. working on clients’ books. She left behind a true legacy of professionalism and trust.
Over the years, Barb found immense joy tending to her yard and garden. She especially loved growing plants from seed and nurturing them into beautiful, thriving gardens. Her passion for gardening was inherited from her dad, and it was a bond that remained strong even after his passing—no doubt they are now joyfully comparing gardening stories.
Barb had a heart of gold and was a devoted animal lover. She was never without a pet by her side. Over the years, she welcomed ten dogs and numerous cats into her life, each one receiving her unconditional love and gentle care. She shared an especially close bond with her cat Mugger. They cared for each other for over 18 years. Barb is survived by her furry companion Winter, who remained faithfully by her side.
Barb also shared a special connection with her nieces, nephew, and their children in Hardisty, Alberta. She treasured these relationships deeply and took great pride in being a part of their lives. Her presence will be deeply missed by them, as well as by her friends and extended family. Barb will be dearly missed by her sister, Nance.
Barb is now reunited with her beloved father Cliff, mother Helen, brother Doug and past pets. The garden in heaven just got a little brighter.
In keeping with Barb’s wishes, there will be no funeral. If you feel moved to honour her memory, please consider making a donation to the Saving Grace Animal Society, the Edmonton Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a local animal shelter or an animal rescue organization —something Barb would have truly appreciated.
