The Okotoks Dawgs came from behind to pick up an 11–9 win over the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Thursday, splitting a two-game series.
Thursday night was a slugfest at Ross Wells Park as the teams combined for five home runs.
The Miller Express held a 4–0 lead before giving up seven unanswered runs between the fourth and seventh innings.
Moose Jaw opened the game with a 2–0 lead after the first inning. Austin Gurney’s single drove in Thomas Soto, and Tanner DeGrazia was hit by a pitch that advanced Gurney from third to home.
The Miller Express extended their lead in the bottom of the third. DeGrazia hit a two-run homer with Jackson Yeager on base to make it 4–0.
The wheels started to fall off in the fourth inning. Zane Skansi hit a solo home run for the Dawgs in the top half of the inning to get Okotoks on the board.
Okotoks added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 4–3 ball game.
Then in the top of the seventh, Jacob Wrubleski hit a grand slam to give the Dawgs a 7–4 lead.
Okotoks added four more runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead by seven.
Moose Jaw replied with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. William Edwards hit a single to score Evan Deringer, Gurney followed with a sacrifice fly to centre field to score Soto, and Yeager capped the inning with a two-run homer.
Edwards hit another single to drive in Deringer in the bottom of the ninth, but the comeback fell short as the Dawgs held on for the 11–9 win.
Leading the Miller Express at the plate was Edwards, who went three-for-five with two RBIs. DeGrazia was one-for-four with three RBIs.
The Miller Express now face the Swift Current 57s in a four-game series. The first two games are in Swift Current on Friday and Saturday. Moose Jaw will host the 57s for a Sunday matinee at 2:05 p.m. at Ross Wells Park, and the series wraps up Tuesday back in Swift Current.
