The Livestock Marketing Association held the first annual World Livestock Auction Championship in 1963 to spotlight North America’s top livestock auctioneers – and to salute their traditionally important role in the competitive livestock marketing process.

The competition is made up of several categories with a team of 5 judges that judge the competitor in the auctioneering portion, and five other judges in the interview round.  All 30 contestants are asked the same three industry-related questions the day prior to the sale.  How each one's articulation and knowledge base is then scored, making up 25% of that contender's total score.

"The auctioneering round is scored off of command of the sale, your professionalism, clarity, rhythm, timing, knowledge of the product, your expedition of the sale and would you hire this auctioneer?" explains Jack.

"And it's a very interesting process," he adds. "We're sequestered so that none of us can hear the questions until we get on the stand.  And they're judged on your introduction, your professionalism, body language, your articulation. Did you answer the question substance of the answer? And would this auctioneer make a good ambassador for the Livestock Marketing Association?"

Jack says achieving second place was a great experience, but as always, he's got his sites on First Place and the new pickup truck that comes with it in next year's competition.

"It's a challenging one, but yeah, we're definitely working towards that," he says. "You know, it just forces you to grow as an individual, as an auctioneer, as a marketer and as an individual to be able to earn that number one spot!"

Dean Edge from Rimbey, Alberta was named the World Livestock Auctioneer Champion at this year's World Championship. Edge is only the third Canadian to win the competition at the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, which made its debut in 1963.

As the reigning World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, Dean Edge will be enjoying the next 12 months driving the custom-wrapped World Livestock Auctioneer Championship truck to share his victory, showcase his talents, and be an ambassador for the Livestock Marketing Association.

In addition to the pickup truck, Edge was also awarded $6,000 in cash, as well as a champion’s rifle, a custom belt buckle, a world champion ring, a bronze sculpture, and a golden gavel.

For Heartland Livestock's Brennin Jack, June of 2026 can't come soon enough although there are hundreds of thousands of cattle to pass through the gates at Virden's auction services.  "I started working for Nelson Brothers, the owners of Heartland here, 20 years ago this year. So, it's all I've ever done, and it's been a passion I've had for a very long time," he says.
