Mother nature treated us to a dramatic display of nature’s power and beauty Friday as wild weather swept across parts of the province, bringing funnel clouds, severe hail, and flooding.

Northwest of Edmonton, Environment Canada issued tornado warnings after funnel clouds were spotted in the afternoon. While no touchdowns were confirmed, several residents reported seeing rotating columns of air and swirling debris under darkening skies.

Close to Airdrie communities near Olds were pelted with hail as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. Meanwhile, Edmonton saw torrential rains lead to flash flooding in parts of the city, overwhelming storm drains and submerging some roadways.

The unsettled weather is expected to linger into the weekend across much of central and southern Alberta. In Airdrie, the forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud today with a chance of showers or thunderstorms by afternoon. Daytime highs are expected to reach 19 C, cooling to 7 C overnight.

Sunday's outlook for Airdrie features hazy morning sun, increasing cloudiness, and scattered showers or isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, with a high near 19 C once again. Despite the clouds, many Father’s Day outdoor plans should remain mostly dry.

Environment Canada is urging residents to monitor weather alerts over the weekend as the active pattern continues. More details here.
