Red Deer student wins top honours at Provincial Heritage Fair.

Central Middle School in Red Deer held its annual school-wide Heritage Fair in April, showcasing 160 student projects highlighting Canadian history, culture and personal heritage.

Students from all grades were invited to explore any Canadian topic of interest or share a family heritage story through research and creative presentations.

From those, 12 top projects were selected by judges and teachers to represent the school at the Provincial Heritage Fair in Calgary in May.

Among the finalists was Grade 7 student Tessa Meikle, whose project focused on the development of insulin and the lived experiences of people with diabetes.

Drawing on personal interviews with family members affected by the condition, as well as insights from her parents, who are both physicians, Meikle’s project offered a heartfelt and informative look at the science and social impact of the disease.

At the provincial level, she earned three major awards: Best Project for Science and Innovation, Best Thematic Project, and Top Overall Project.

As the top winner, Meikle has now submitted her project to the Heritage Fair National Showcase, an initiative of Canada’s History Society that celebrates outstanding student work and encourages a deeper appreciation of Canadian heritage.

National judges will review all student submissions and select four winners, who will each receive a $500 RESP contribution and a trip for two to a national celebration.

Winning projects will also be featured in Canada’s History magazine, and finalists will be contacted in the fall.
