It’s engines on and hearts full tonight at Salem Home’s annual Car Show, taking place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Salem Home at 165 15th Street in Winkler. The event promises an evening packed with chrome, community, and compassion—with all proceeds going toward the Winkler Daycare’s new furnace project.
A community tradition with a purpose
Admission is by donation, and every dollar raised tonight will support an essential need for a cherished local institution. “This year, all funds raised will go to the Winkler Daycare,” said Director of Community Engagement Alana Thiessen, one of the event organizers. “Their building is aging, and they need a new furnace. It’s their 60th anniversary this year, and what better way to celebrate than by supporting the next generation?”
Salem Home residents have a unique connection to the daycare, with many having been part of its early days or knowing families who were. "Some of our residents remember the Winkler Daycare when it first opened,” Thiessen added. “It’s a full-circle moment for them to now give back.”
Classic cars, fresh stories
Among the many show-stoppers tonight will be a 1987 IROC Camaro brought by Therapeutic Recreation Manager Vanessa McGregor—but the real story is in the history.
“This is actually my dad’s car,” McGregor shared. “He bought it brand new in his early 20s but sold it when he started a family. A few years ago, he was scrolling Kijiji and found what looked like his old car. He compared the VIN number—it was the exact same one!”
McGregor, who’s expecting a child of her own, joked that her dream car is a practical one. “Right now, I’d love a good SUV,” she laughed. “But if you ask me about classics, my dad’s ’70 Chevy Nova is pretty amazing, too. He’s bringing that one tonight.”
Cars, food, and community fun
Tonight’s event isn’t just for gearheads—there’s something for everyone. A variety of vehicles will be on display, from muscle cars to motorcycles, and maybe even the light pink VW bug that’s been spotted in town.
“If you have something with wheels and a story, bring it,” said McGregor. “Tractors, bikes—whatever! The residents love seeing the variety.”
And if cars aren’t your thing, the food alone is worth the trip. “We’ve got slushies, popcorn, chips, and pop,” Thiessen noted. “And the 2T’s food truck will be here too. I’m definitely coming for the food!”
Giving back—one car at a time
At its core, the Salem Home Car Show is about more than just vehicles. It’s about connection, heritage, and helping others.
“Salem often relies on community support,” said Thiessen, “and this is one of those rare moments where the residents and staff get to give back—to invest in the future of Winkler by helping the daycare. It’s not just a car show; it’s a celebration of who we are as a community.”
