With an eye towards the development of the city, Humboldt’s City Council are looking into closing a municipal street.

At last Monday’s special City Council meeting, the City of Humboldt introduced a new bylaw that would see the closure of 10th Street that would be north and south of 14th Ave in the city’s northern section.

Planning Coordinator Tanner Zimmerman said at the meeting, “We don't see a need for 10th St. to be where it is. If someone wants to create a new one, they can, but we're OK with closing that and in order to close the road it was required for us to pass a bylaw to close the road.”

Originally the City thought they had to require permission from the Ministry of Highways, but since the road isn’t located on the highway, they only need to provide notification for the change.

Mayor Rob Muench pointed out during the meeting that the south of the street is Elizabeth Park.

“Basically, can't go right through anyway. So, this is one of the reasons that whatever happens north of the park is going to be up to how the development is laid out later on.”

The bylaw was given its first reading last Monday. Before it’s given a second reading at the next Monday, June 23, a public notice has been issued.

Before the council meeting on Monday, there will be a public hearing on the matter.
