Radio stations across Saskatchewan came out in a big way last week, with the first-ever Saskatchewan Day of Caring for Wildfire Evacuees helping raise money to ease the stresses of people who've had to evacuate thanks to wildfires in northern Saskatchewan.

Through the combined effort of over 60 stations and other media sources, as well as the Saskatchewan community, $680,345 has been raised.

“This wildfire season has been especially challenging, and the Canadian Red Cross is working around the clock to provide comfort and care to those affected," said Luc Mullinder, the vice president of the Manitoba, Nunavut and Saskatchewan regions for the Canadian Red Cross. "We’re incredibly grateful to the radio stations and broadcasters across Saskatchewan who made the radiothon possible, and to the generous Canadians who donated.”

The situation has been developing with positive news for those affected, including an end to the evacuation order affecting communities like La Ronge and Candle Lake.

Donations are still being accepted for the fundraiser, with the federal government matching those contributions through June 27.

Canadians wishing to support those affected can still donate online at www.redcross.ca.
