A system filled with thunderstorms is bearing down on the southeast, as some intense showers are likely to hit a few areas. The system is expected to begin this afternoon, with thunderstorms persisting into Thursday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Crawford Luke gives a look at what Environment Canada is predicting from this.
"For both today, Wednesday, and again tomorrow, Thursday, could be back-to-back days of thunderstorms in southeastern Saskatchewan. It looks like today is probably the higher chance, where a lot of people are probably going to see at least one thunderstorm today."
"Tomorrow might be a bit more isolated, so maybe not as widespread in coverage. Both days it's looking like a potentially some of these storms could reach severe limits with hail maybe quarter-sized and then winds up to 90 kilometres an hour potentially."
While a look at Environment Canada's forecast shows a low chance of rain, Luke says that's thanks to thunderstorms being tightly packed.
"The nature of thunderstorms, I suppose, is that even when they are widespread, they are still quite isolated, just kind of by their very nature. But all that being said, it kind of seems like there might be a few more storms today than there are tomorrow. I suppose it could be remaining north of Estevan as well, slightly, like maybe Weyburn has a better chance. But Estevan's definitely looking at a risk of thunderstorms as well."
As lightning is in the air and those storms are raging, Luke asks that people think ahead and stay safe today and tomorrow.
"We always like to say, when thunder roars, go indoors. So if you can see lightning or hear thunder, it's a good time to get inside and stay inside until the storm has passed. Otherwise, just stay tuned for potential watches and warnings from Environment Canada. Yesterday we had a severe thunderstorm watch out for southwestern Saskatchewan, it's possible there could be one issued later today for southeastern Saskatchewan."
