Excitement is running high in Portage la Prairie as the Portage Stampeders prepare to compete in the 2025 Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games this weekend in Winnipeg. The team, led by head coach Deanna Talbot, was honoured earlier this week at a pep rally that brought together athletes, families, and community supporters in a show love and support.
"I am so proud," Talbot said. "This is my second provincial games as a coach, and I'm just so excited to see these athletes compete, make new friends, and be celebrated by their families and our community."
The Portage Stampeders will be represented by six athletes: Caleb Reykdal, Dylan Wilson, Paula Jordan, Stephanie Holmes, Sarah Holmes, and Katie Niles. Events include the 100-meter and 200-meter races, relay, shot put, standing long jump, and mini-javelin. The team's energy is only matched by how much they care about each other
"What makes Special Olympics so special is not just the competition," said Talbot. "It's seeing the athletes support one another, cheering at the finish line, encouraging each other when they're nervous, and making memories together."
You could feel how excited athlete Sarah Holmes is when asked what she is most looking forward to,
"Everything! And making new friends."
Paula Jordan, a seasoned competitor, emphasized her love of the community spirit.
"My favourite part is my friends," she said.
Caleb Reykdal enthusiastically says, "Go Stampeders, go!"
Stephanie Holmes, known for her strength in shot put, also shared her excitement despite a bit of shyness. Saying she's ready to compete.
The team's recent pep rally featured support from local leaders, including the Mayor Sharilyn Knox, who energized the athletes with a speech of encouragement.
"It was a perfect kickoff," Talbot said. "The support from our community means so much."
Talbot also highlighted the critical role of families.
"These families are up early, helping get their athletes to practice and events. Their support is everything."
With their spirits high and their cheer 'We are the champs GO Stampeders!' is loud and proud, the Portage Stampeders are ready to make Portage la Prairie proud this weekend!!
Go Stampeders, go!
