Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta has ordered a mental health assessment for the 16-year-old youth who was arrested in last week's physical attack against a fellow student Brandon's Neelin High School.

The mental health assessment will be conducted to determine the accused's mental state now and at the time of the attack.

“Significant material disclosure has been made to the Crown Attorney's Office, inclusive of statements and digital evidence, a thorough analysis by the Crown's Office of the investigative materials is underway," shares Brandon Police Chief Tyler Bates. "The collective assessment of the evidence disclosed to the Crown Attorney's Office will dictate whether any additional charges are warranted.   We continue to work in close collaboration with the Crown to assess all available evidence.”

At approximately 1:15 PM last Tuesday afternoon, Brandon Police Service responded to a report of the incident at Neelin High School involving two male youths.

The 16-year-old male was in possession of a sword inside the school and used the weapon to inflict injury to the 15-year-old male with stabbings to the chest, arms and thighs.  The 15-year-old was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre by ambulance in serious condition but was upgraded to stable condition by the next day.

The suspect is facing serious charges including attempted murder, uttering threats, possession of a weapon dangerous for a dangerous purpose, and disguise with intent.  Further charges may be added.
