As the academic year draws to a close at La Verendrye School (LVS), students and staff alike are celebrating growth, reflecting on change, and preparing for a new chapter of leadership. Vice Principal Alan Patterson, who will step into the role of principal this fall, shared his thoughts on a year full of student development, community building, and meaningful transitions.
"The year really flew by," said Patterson. "When you're having fun and doing good things, time flies. We've seen so much growth in our students, particularly with friendships and our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) initiatives."
But with June often comes mixed emotions. Patterson noted that the end of the year can be challenging for students as they prepare to say goodbye to teachers and routines they've grown attached to.
"They know change is coming, and that can bring anxiety," he said, adding that he encourages students to stay active and continue reading over the summer.
A significant shift in leadership awaits the school, as long-time Principal Michele Laidlaw retires. Patterson praised Laidlaw for her unwavering commitment to students.
"It's always been about the children first. Every decision she's made came down to what was best for the kids. That's something I really admire."
He also credited Laidlaw for promoting trauma-informed practices and deepening the school's understanding of how poverty impacts learning, efforts that have left a lasting legacy on staff culture and student support.
Faye Maly, a resource teacher at LVS, echoed the sentiment.
"Michele has been such an important person here and, in every school, she's worked at. We are going to miss her a lot. She's done so many wonderful things for kids."
Another big farewell comes with the retirement of Rhonda Hanna, who has been a vital part of the school's Walking School Bus program and textiles education.
"She's always here, engaging with our students, even as a divisional employee," said Patterson. "She's given so much to this school and our community."
As Patterson steps into his new role, Jordy Taylor will become vice principal. Staffing changes continue as the school says goodbye to Stephanie Brown, who is heading to North Memorial School, and welcomes Lori Mackadenski from Yellowquill School.
Looking ahead, Patterson is optimistic.
"This has been my third year at LVS, and every year has been wonderful. I'm looking forward to another great school year come September."
He had one final message for Laidlaw,
"It’s been a blessing to work alongside her. I wish her safe, fun travels, and I know she'll be back to sub. She'll always be part of this school."
As the school year wraps up with celebrations, including a community feast and drumming presentation supported by McCain Foods, La Verendrye School looks to the future grounded in a legacy of student-centered leadership and strong community ties.
