After a transformative year leading the Oakville Early Learning Centre from its opening in June 2024 to a thriving childcare centre, Executive Director Cindy Curry is stepping down, handing the reins to Assistant Director Emily Hillier.
Curry, who helped establish the centre's foundation, is leaving to take on a new role as a full-time instructor at University College of the North in The Pas, Manitoba.
"It was really fun to be a part of Oakville and getting them up and running," said Curry. "But I had an offer… and I think that's just the next step in my journey, to hopefully inspire up-and-coming early child educators (ECEs)."
During her tenure, Curry became a central figure in the community, guiding the centre through its crucial first year and creating a strong, supportive environment for both children and staff.
"I'm truly going to miss the children, the hugs, the high fives. It just fills your heart with joy," she said. "Our staff is amazing, the board has been phenomenal, and the families have been so welcoming. It's been wonderful to be part of something so great."
Curry emphasized the critical role of early childhood educators in the broader economy.
"We are the driving force behind the economy," she said. "Without childcare, no one could go to work. We need programs with people who are trained, passionate, and knowledgeable."
Stepping into the director role is Emily Hillier, who first joined as the infant room lead and quickly rose through the ranks.
"I'm nervous and excited," Hillier admitted. "I love the programming and the dynamic that has been created here. It's a new opportunity for me to explore and grow, and to encourage others to grow too."
Hillier brings a strong background in early childhood education, with previous experience in Montessori schools and after-school programs. Now that her own children are older, she says she's excited to take on this leadership role and invest in both children and staff.
"I really do care passionately about creating a community environment that supports families," she said. "And I want to continue building on the incredible work that Cindy has started."
Hillier expressed gratitude for Curry's mentorship.
"She took a huge risk in hiring me, "Hillier said. "It's been great working with her. It's always been a team environment, which encouraged me to take chances and grow."
The leadership transition comes just in time for the centre’s one-year anniversary celebration on July 3.
"We're excited to celebrate our one-year anniversary," Curry said. "It's been a wonderful first year, thanks to the children, the staff, the board, and the entire Oakville community."
As the Oakville Early Learning Centre enters its second year, a new chapter begins. Rooted in strong foundations and guided by a shared passion for early childhood education.
