A statement released by the Board of Directors for Central Alberta Pride Society (CAPS) announces the cancellation of many Pride events this year.
The statement, posted on their social media accounts on Tuesday, reads as follows:
"In October 2024, several former board members made serious and damaging allegations against the Central Alberta Pride Society and its board of directors, including claims of dishonesty, lack of accountability, and unethical conduct.
We wish to unequivocally state that the allegations were inaccurate and unsubstantiated.
While the former board members have since formally retracted their statements and issued written apologies, the allegations have led to a significant decline in sponsorship, volunteer engagement, and overall community involvement.
The damage to the society’s reputation has been substantial and will take time to repair.
To focus on this task, the board has made the difficult decision to step away from hosting events in 2025.
This includes many of the flagship celebrations that our community has come to love and anticipate, such as Pride in the Park, Drag Bingo, Roller Disco, Movie in the Park, and 2Spirit Day.
While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we believe that pausing operations for the remainder of the year will provide space for reflection and renewal for the society, our board, and the broader community.
We thank you for your understanding, and we will have no further comment on this matter."
