A new summer cheerleading camp is coming to Cochrane, and it's all about building confidence, creating community, and spreading spirit.
From August 25 to 29, students entering grades 8 through 12 can take part in a week-long cheerleading camp, hosted by the University of Calgary Cheer Team and Bow Valley High School volunteer coach Maya Griscowsky.
“We wanted to give kids a chance to experience the sport of cheer, get out of the house, and feel part of something bigger,” said Griscowsky, who also cheers with the U of C team. “It’s a great way to build school spirit and get active before the school year starts.”
The camp is open to all experience levels, whether students come from a dance or gymnastics background or are trying cheer for the first time. The program includes stunting, jumps, tumbling, and dance, and wraps up with a group performance in the Cochrane Labour Day Parade.
“Cochrane only recently started exploring competitive cheer,” Griscowsky explained. “Last year was our first season competing at Bow Valley High, and we brought home a banner. It’s growing slowly, but there’s so much excitement.”

Griscowsky's passion for the sport is deeply personal, she started cheering in high school, later joined the U of C team, and returned to Cochrane to help build something new for local youth.
The cheer camp is entirely volunteer-run, and the small registration fee goes directly toward facility costs, T-shirts, and supplies.
For students looking to get involved, the message is simple: just show up with a positive attitude.
