The Morden Legion is firing up the grill in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Pembina Valley this Saturday, June 21st. The fundraising BBQ takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Morden Co-op parking lot and features a $10 meal deal that includes a sausage burger or hot dog, chips, and a drink — all for a great cause.
The BBQ is part of a growing partnership between the Morden Legion and Big Brothers Big Sisters, sparked by a conversation between Legion member Tammy Petkau and BBBS Executive Director Jenelle Neufeld.
“Tammy and I were chatting about how tough fundraising has been in today’s climate,” said Neufeld. “It meant so much when she told me the Legion was organizing a BBQ to support us. I was honoured they chose our organization.”
All proceeds will directly benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters programming, including one-on-one and group mentoring initiatives in local schools.
“Our group mentoring programs cost more to run, but we’ve had to pivot due to a lack of volunteers,” explained Neufeld. “We’re committed to keeping all our programs free for participants, and this kind of support helps make that possible.”
Neufeld has a personal connection to the Morden Legion. A member since age 18, she says the organization has long played a meaningful role in her life.
“The Legion holds a special place in my heart — my grandfather was a veteran. When a place like the Legion chooses to support an organization like ours, it really speaks volumes.”
The event isn’t just about fundraising — it’s about building community. Neufeld added that the collaboration between a typically senior-focused organization and a youth-serving charity highlights the full-circle impact of local support.
“All the kids we mentor today will one day become active members of our community. This is how you build strong, lasting connections across generations.”
