Horse lovers, mark your calendars! Pembina Valley Bible Camp is bringing the community together for a day of fun, friendly competition, and connection with their second annual Gymkhana event, taking place Saturday, June 21st at the campgrounds. This horse-focused gathering is open to riders of all ages and experience levels, and promises something for everyone—whether you ride or just want to enjoy the show.

What is Gymkhana?

Gymkhana (pronounced jim-kah-nuh) is a fast-paced, skill-based event involving horseback riding games and activities. Riders will participate in a variety of challenges, from barrel racing to egg-and-spoon balance races, all designed to test agility, control, and—most importantly—have fun.

"It’s a fun horse event for people to bring their horses and participate in different events,” said Jill Friesen, Program Director at Pembina Valley Bible Camp. “We have nine different events they can enter. You pay a one-time fee and can participate in as many or as few as you want.”

Not just for the pros

You don’t have to be an expert rider to participate. Friesen emphasized that the event is open to all skill levels, including young children (with parental supervision).

“Anyone’s welcome,” she said. “If you have a horse, bring it out. Whether you’re new to horseback riding or experienced, it’s a great day to connect with others in the horse community.”

Even if you don’t ride, spectators are encouraged to come out and enjoy the festivities. There’s no admission for viewers—just bring a lawn chair and soak in the experience.

Community spirit at its core

While Pembina Valley Bible Camp often hosts fundraisers, Friesen noted that Gymkhana is not one of them.

“This is just a fun event to bring people out from the community, especially the horse community,” she explained. “It’s a chance to enjoy a day together and to use our facilities in a new way.”

This year's event also ties in with the camp's continued focus on expanding and improving their horse facilities.

“We’re currently working on a barn project,” Friesen added. “It’s exciting to have events like this happening while we’re growing that part of our programming.”

Schedule, pricing, and what to expect

  • Registration: 9:00–10:00 AM

  • Events Begin: 10:00 AM sharp

  • Entry Fee: $20 per horse (riders can enter as many events as they want)

  • Location: Pembina Valley Bible Camp (map and directions on their website)

Camp horses will not be available for this event, so riders must bring their own. A canteen will be open all day with hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks, and drinks available for purchase.

Come for the event, stay for the experience

If you’ve never been to Pembina Valley Bible Camp before, this event offers a great reason to visit.

“Kids who come out here for the first time always say the same thing: ‘I didn’t know we had mountains!’” Friesen laughed. “It’s actually a valley, but it’s such a beautiful place and people are always amazed when they get here.”

Summer camp spaces still available

While you're at Gymkhana, it’s also a chance to ask about Pembina Valley Bible Camp’s horse camps, which still have some spots available for the summer.

“We offer beginner to advanced horse camps,” said Friesen. “Whether you're just starting out or looking for an overnight trail ride, there’s something for everyone.”

In addition to horse camps, there are limited openings in creative arts, wilderness camps, and junior camps. Visit their website or follow them on social media for the most current availability.

Volunteers still needed

Camp preparations for the summer season are nearly complete, but there’s still a call for help—particularly in the kitchen and medical areas.

“We’re still looking for volunteer cooks and one more medical officer for the final week of camp in August,” said Friesen. “If people are looking to get involved, helping in the kitchen is a great way to serve.”

Don’t miss it!

Whether you’re bringing a horse or just want to enjoy a day outdoors with the community, Gymkhana at Pembina Valley Bible Camp is the place to be this Saturday.
