Last Tuesday the Weyburn Police Service responded to a collision at the intersection of Highway 39 and Third Street. The incident involved a truck and a mobility scooter.
Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John explains that the incident was an accident, and no tickets were issued.
“The mobility scooter was off the curb in the lane of traffic where it really shouldn't have been, and sort of at an inopportune time, a person was turning and clipped the gentleman. So just accidental, no fault of anybody. So nobody got any tickets or anything.”
The elderly man driving the scooter was found by responding officers with minor injuries. He was transported to the hospital for further care. St. John says the scooter was completely destroyed. After investigation, they determined no one was at fault.
The incident presents an opportunity to discuss proper safety precautions for mobility scooters on the road, St. John begins by advising that scooters be driven on the roadway.
“Curbs can be a little dangerous. You could get tipped over if you lose control, and there's not much room for error on a sidewalk. So, it's best to be on the roadway, just off to the side of the road and people go around you.”
He also recommends high visibility indicators like flags or reflective vests, and points to shared responsibilities in keeping all drivers safe on the road.
“It's best just to be over on the side of the road. Then if you have to come into the lane a little bit, take a look behind, make sure it's free and clear and just be careful. Other drivers, be respectful of anyone on a chair.”
