A Red Deer volleyball team has received a Mayor’s Recognition Award following a spectacular season.

The senior boys’ volleyball team from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School won the 4A provincial championship this year and was nominated for the honour by their principal.

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders were presented with the award during a ceremony on Wednesday night.

Head coach Travis Czainski said the team enjoyed one last celebration together.

“We got to kind of celebrate with all the other award recipients last night and got together as a group and celebrated one last time,” said Czainski.

The last time the Raiders won provincials was in 2014, but Czainski said the excitement is still visible in the current team.

“Quite a while ago now, but even when you see them in the hallways today, they’ve got smiles on their faces, they’re wearing their championship sweaters and all that,” he said.

With nine players returning, the team hopes to repeat their success next season.

In a special twist, the provincial championships will be hosted by Lindsay Thurber in Red Deer this fall — an opportunity Czainski says he is looking forward to.

“To win it in your home gym would make it just that much more special,” he said.

The volleyball season begins in September, with provincials scheduled for November.
