The Estevan area just got done with a handful of tornadoes tearing through the area, but more adverse weather is already on the way. This weekend, a system is expected to dump a lot of rain into the area, beginning today and continuing to Sunday night.
Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, takes a look at the system and what exactly it'll bring.
"I would describe it as a sort of multi-episode or multiple-round kind of system. So you might find that there are some breaks over the course of the weekend. But overall, it is looking like a rainy, wet weekend and some cooler temperatures as well, accompanying it."
The rain begins today, which will be similar to the previously focused and intermittent thunderstorms we've seen over the week.
"It's looking like we could be seeing more of that again today, a lot of the thunderstorm focus today has kind of shifted south into North Dakota, but there's still a chance we could see some in southeastern Saskatchewan," said Luke. "As we move into tonight, that system with the bigger rain kind of starts to approach, so we might start getting into some rain or perhaps even a thunderstorm from that as well."
As the weekend continues, Luke says the southeast will feel some of the heavy rains that are drifting in from the west.
"It's definitely looking like widespread rain. As you go further west in the province, that's where we're kind of expecting the the higher totals to be, kind of north of Highway 1, south of the Yellowhead, closer to the Alberta border, but pretty much all of southern Saskatchewan looks to be in for some sort of decent rainfall this weekend."
As the southeast saw a tornado recently, a lot of people might be worried that they'll need to duck for cover again this weekend.
Luke dismisses the idea, saying that the conditions aren't overly viable for a tornado.
"Not really anticipating it this weekend. It's looking like this weekend, the story really is just going to be rain and maybe some of the colder temperatures. I know in the southeast we're not really projecting the cold to be as chilly as a place like, say, Saskatoon, but it'll definitely be cooler than normal for sure.
Luke says that while it's unfortunate that what would have been a nice weekend will be ruined by rain, he hopes that the moisture provided by that will be well-received by farmers hoping for water on their crops.
