With traffic expected to ramp up over the summer months, Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to stay alert and drive safely — especially when sharing the road with large commercial vehicles.

From semi-trucks and tractor-trailers to buses and heavy haulers, commercial vehicles require extra space and attention, RCMP said in a traffic safety bulletin issued this week.

“Collisions between commercial and passenger vehicles can have serious consequences due to the sheer size and weight of commercial units,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Taking extra precaution around trucks and trailers can significantly reduce the risk of collision.”

RCMP say both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers have a role to play in keeping roads safe. Officers are reminding drivers to remain alert, plan ahead, and respect the space large vehicles need to operate safely.

Tips for commercial drivers include:

  • Conducting routine trip inspections and carrying all required documents.

  • Staying rested and pulling over if fatigued.

  • Monitoring traffic, construction and weather conditions before and during travel.

  • Maintaining safe distances and using caution with blind spots and wide turns.

  • Securing cargo to prevent load shifts or spills.

Passenger vehicle drivers are reminded to:

  • Keep a safe distance behind trucks — if you can’t see the truck’s mirrors, the driver can’t see you.

  • Increase following distance to gain a better view of the road ahead.

  • Watch for strong gusts, splashes or debris when passing large vehicles.

  • Leave extra space when merging or changing lanes in front of a truck, as they need more time to brake.

  • Avoid cutting in front of a turning truck, which may require a wide turning radius.

RCMP say defensive driving and increased awareness can go a long way in preventing collisions.
