A weather system headed for southern Manitoba could bring major rainfall and flooding to parts of the Southeast.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement covering areas including Bissett, Victoria Beach, Nopiming Provincial Park, Pine Falls, Whiteshell, Lac du Bonnet, Pinawa, Sprague, and Northwest Angle Provincial Forest.

Torrential downpours expected

A low-pressure system tracking toward the Lake of the Woods region will trigger showers and thunderstorms beginning midday Sunday.

With humid conditions feeding these storms, Environment Canada warns of possible torrential downpours and localized overland flooding.

"Localized accumulations close to 100 mm may be possible if an area is impacted by multiple thunderstorms in succession," Environment Canada says in the statement.

Rainfall totals will vary widely across the region, with some locations possibly receiving little to no rain. However, widespread areas could experience accumulations between 25 and 75 millimetres.

The storm activity is expected to diminish by Sunday evening as it moves eastward into Ontario.

Environment Canada advises residents in affected areas to monitor local forecasts and prepare for changing conditions, especially those near waterways prone to flooding.

Less rain for Winnipeg

In Winnipeg, residents can expect showers starting late this morning with potential thunderstorms in the afternoon, accumulating 10 to 15 millimetres of rain.

Winds will increase, gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour. Rain will ease overnight, though there remains a risk of thunderstorms this evening, adding an additional 5 millimetres.
