Town of Ponoka announces Stampede traffic control measures with the Stampede starting on Wednesday, June 25.

The Town of Ponoka, in cooperation with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, will once again implement its annual traffic control plan to help ensure pedestrian and vehicle safety during the 2025 Ponoka Stampede.

The following traffic control measures will be in effect 24 hours a day from Monday, June 23, to Wednesday, July 2:

  • A reduced speed limit of 30 km/h along Highway 53 – beginning east of Highway 2A and ending at 46 Street.
  • A reduced speed limit of 50 km/h along Highway 2A – beginning south of 36 Avenue to the intersection of Highways 2A and 53.
  • A temporary four-way stop at Highway 53 and 50 Street – advanced signage will notify motorists approaching from both directions. The access road to the Stampede grounds will be temporarily open at this intersection, making it a four-way stop.
  • Access to Highway 53 will be closed at 54 Street – 54 Street will remain open to local traffic and users of the Ponoka Arena Complex. However, access to Highway 53 will be blocked at the south end of 54 Street.
  • RCMP traffic assistance – RCMP personnel will help direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic at crossings on Highway 53 during peak periods to ensure public safety. Crossings will be clearly marked with signage.

“With high volumes of traffic expected during the Ponoka Stampede once again this summer, the Town is committed to helping ensure the safety of our residents and visitors with these temporary traffic control measures,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson.

Ponoka residents are encouraged to consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic during Stampede week.

Further road closures will be in place for the annual Ponoka Stampede Parade, which begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27.

Temporary road closures will affect all roadways along the parade route from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., immediately following the parade’s conclusion.

The parade will begin and end at the Ponoka Arena Complex.
