When Vionell Holdings Partnership decided to build a new apartment complex in Killarney, it wasn’t just a business move – it was a response to a community need. Spearheaded by CEO Jason Roblin and driven by conversations with former mayor Merv Tweed, the project is helping to tackle the housing shortage affecting many parts of Manitoba.
"Employers were saying they had no place for workers to live, making it hard to attract skilled labour," says Roblin. "Merv helped gather a group of local investors to support the project."
Smart design for diverse needs
The new development offers 32 units: 18 two-bedroom and 18 three-bedroom suites. Designed with flexibility in mind, the layout appeals to both families and seniors. "We've seen similar layouts perform really well in Brandon and Portage," says Roblin. "Even though they were built with families in mind, seniors have been the primary tenants in some cases."
Each three-bedroom unit includes two bathrooms, and the entire building maintains a high standard of construction. Rents are $1,699 for three-bedrooms and $1,499 for two-bedroom units plus hydro, reflective of modern building costs that are consistent across regions.
A retirement-friendly community
Roblin, who grew up in nearby Pierson, believes Killarney offers unique appeal for retirees. "It has amenities you don’t see in every small town," he says, pointing to the local golf and curling clubs, pickleball courts, gym facilities, and robust healthcare services. The natural beauty of Killarney Lake only adds to the town's charm.
A catalyst for growth
Roblin hopes the project will inspire further development. "In other towns like Portage, competitors arrived soon after we did. That hasn’t happened yet in Killarney, but we’d welcome it. More housing options help everyone."
Roblin notes that they've started offering furnished, month-to-month rentals for professionals like doctors and managers.
Investing in the future
"We believe in this community,” says Roblin. “This isn’t just about filling apartments – it’s about helping the town grow and retain its residents."
With 21 units still available, the Killarney project presents a timely option for anyone looking for quality housing in a picturesque and well-equipped small town. Whether you're a young professional, a family, or a retiree, the doors are open – and so is the opportunity to be part of a growing community.
Accessibility and viewing options
Although there's no upcoming open house, interested renters can easily schedule a viewing. "We have an on-site caretaker who can show units at the tenant’s convenience," says Roblin.
