A new volunteer-driven transportation service is launching in Indian Head, easing the burden of community members there who must travel to access medical services. Wheels for Wellness will provide shuttle rides to appointments in Weyburn, alongside Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, and Melville.
According to a release sent by the organization, Wheels for Wellness was modelled after the success of the similar Gravelbourg Cares shuttle. It was designed to address a growing need in Indian Head and the surrounding area for accessible and affordable transportation. It will be especially beneficial to those who are seniors, low income, or with limited mobility.
Committee Chair for Wheels for Wellness, Marg Ollett, is quoted saying “We know that missed medical appointments can lead to serious health setbacks. This service is about dignity, health and community support – ensuring no one is left behind because they can’t drive or afford a ride.”
Five Indian Head locals are leading the initiative, working with clinics, care homes, and municipalities to refine the service before its expected launch later this year. They are currently recruiting drivers and seeking community donations to support the maintenance, fuel, and insurance for the vehicles used.
All rides will be provided by volunteer drivers in designated Wheels for Wellness vehicles. The service will be offered on a by-donation basis to ensure it is accessible, but also financially sustainable.
The service is set to launch in the fall of this year. Those interested in volunteering, donating, or seeking more information can contact wheelsforwellness@gmail.com.
