Infrastructure upgrade paves way for industrial growth in Blackfalds. Website/Town of Blackfalds

The Town of Blackfalds Broadway reservoir project is set to support future growth.

Construction has begun in Blackfalds on the Broadway Avenue Reservoir expansion project.

In late 2022, the County of Lacombe approached the town to discuss the limits of existing water and sewer servicing for the Aspelund Industrial Area.

Due to these limitations, crews are now installing a large underground water tank and connecting it to the municipal water system.

The expansion is necessary to support future growth and ensure sufficient water is available for both daily use and fire protection, including in the County of Lacombe’s Aspelund Industrial Area.

This project will not affect drinking water; supply and quality will remain the same.

A preliminary budget of $6.8 million was estimated for the project, based on costs of similar infrastructure previously built in the area, according to a council memo prepared by Preston Weran, director of infrastructure and planning services.

However, limited information was available on the final scope of the project, as no detailed or preliminary design was undertaken before the budget was allocated.

Costs are now anticipated to be closer to $7.8 million.

To help fund the project, the town applied for and received the Government of Alberta’s Local Growth and Sustainability Grant, in the amount of $2,314,486.

The annual grant supports local governments by funding infrastructure that:

  • Addresses growth pressures
  • Attracts economic development opportunities
  • Responds to unique or emergent community needs

Now that construction is underway, most of the work will take place within the fenced construction zone.

However, drivers may notice increased truck traffic and minor delays near the site.

Please watch for turning trucks and drive carefully in the area.

Construction is expected to continue until late 2027, with work hours scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
