Canada Day in Alberta could come in hot, if The Old Farmer’s Almanac has it right.

The publication is forecasting “hot temperatures for [the] Canada Day holiday” across the Prairie provinces. The Farmers’ Almanac offers a slightly tamer prediction, calling for “sunny, very mild” weather between July 1 and 4.

But short-range forecasts suggest the heat could come with a side of thunder.

The Weather Network is calling for a high of 25°C in Airdrie on Tuesday, with humidex values closer to 29°C. Morning skies are expected to be sunny, with a 40 per cent chance of isolated thunderstorms by the afternoon. Overnight, showers are more likely, with a 60 per cent chance of rain and up to 4 mm possible.

Environment Canada has not yet issued its official July 1 forecast. Its most recent outlook points to a warming trend, with June 30 expected to reach 24°C under a mix of sun and cloud. Cooler, unsettled weather is expected earlier in the week, with highs ranging from 17°C to 21°C and periodic chances of showers through Friday and Saturday.

Airdrie will mark the national holiday with a full slate of events across the city.

According to the City of Airdrie, celebrations begin with the Kin Club of Airdrie’s annual pancake breakfast at City Hall starting at 8 a.m., followed by the Canada Day Parade from 10 a.m. to noon through downtown.

The parade is organized by Airdrie Parades and typically draws up to 30,000 attendees and 100 floats.

Downtown businesses will take part in “Celebrate Canada Day Downtown,” offering BBQs, special promotions and local deals. The city has set up an interactive online map to help visitors find participating vendors.

Airdrie's CultureFest will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Nose Creek Regional Park. The multicultural event will feature live performances, food, beer gardens and cultural exhibits representing five continents.

The Airdrie Pro Rodeo wraps up its five-day run on July 1 at the Airdrie Rodeo Grounds.

Canada Day will close with a fireworks display at Chinook Winds Regional Park, starting at 10:45 p.m. The 20-minute show is hosted by the City of Airdrie.

Parking is limited for most events, and the city is urging residents to walk, bike, take transit or use e-scooters when possible.
