Last week, an Airdronian and his child took some time out of their day to try and keep Airdrie residents safe.
Randy Wallington and his son have been writing kind messages and warnings to catch the attention of those who might be biking or using some type of transportation on the path by Airdrie Urgent Care.
Wallington explained that the reason this occurred was due to an awful accident that had taken place.
"I was driving at the end of our street, and as the headlights kind of hit past the alley behind the urgent care, I saw a little bit of a commotion in the dark."
He explained that a girl had been badly hurt from hitting the barricade on her bike.
"They're put there so cars can't get through, but they put the barricade halfway over what looks to be the path, so you can't really see it when it comes near the evening time. She ended up hitting this at a very high speed, and she definitely had trauma to her hips and spine."
Once the girl was in the ambulance, she was taken to Calgary, and then he stayed back after and he helped a young gentleman who was with her because he was also in shock.
He then went on to explain how the idea of drawing on the barricades came about.
"Every time I go there, I remember this, and I thought, nothing has been done, and let's just do some drawing (his son loves to draw). We just decided to draw a little bit of a message and get it out there and warn people, as we don't want others to be injured."
While the recent rain has washed off most of the chalk, Wallington shared that they do plan on going back to the barricades to write the messages again.
He does hope that with getting this story out, maybe an alternative can be found to block the vehicle access or even move the barricade slightly.
"They could make it, where there's a barricade that vehicles cannot go through, but would make it a lot safer for just pedestrians and people with wheelchairs and stuff like that."
He concluded by thanking those who helped the girl that night get into the ambulance.
