On Monday, the original BGC Airdrie Club building was torn down, with a new building on the way.
Denisa Sanness, the Executive Director with the BGC Airdrie Club, explained this was the original site for the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club when they first opened their doors in 1979.
"The plan is that we are building a new building. It will be placed on the site. The building will be able to support children for the next 50 years. So it will be a beautiful addition to the community, and it'll help us to continue supporting children and youth in Airdrie."
"In November of last year, we made the call that the building had become too compromised that we were unable to host programs there, so we pulled everything over to our center location. So currently, we have the children and the youth under one umbrella. So the kids are excited to be back in their own space."
The BGC Airdrie Club currently runs out of their Ron Ebbesen Arena location.
"While we’ll always cherish the unforgettable moments made within those walls, we know that the best is yet to come. Our brand new building is on its way, and with it, a world of new opportunities, fresh adventures, and lifelong memories for generations of young people in our community," shared the BGC Airdrie Club on social media.
The funds were provided by the provincial government under the community facility enhancement program.
"We're grateful for the community support and understanding that tearing down a building is also there's a lot of history and memories that were attached to that, and we recognize that, but creating something newer, stronger and able to meet the changing needs of this community is going to support airdrie's kids for many, many years to come," Sanness concluded with.
