Chinook’s Edge School Division is celebrating the career of Associate Superintendent Shawn Russell, who is retiring at the end of June.
Russell began his teaching career 33 years ago in the Northwest Territories and has worked in four school divisions over the years. His roles have included teacher, vice-principal, principal and associate superintendent.
He joined Chinook’s Edge in 2001 and moved into a leadership role at division office in 2006. He currently serves as Associate Superintendent of Corporate Services.
A retirement celebration was held June 19 in Innisfail, with staff from division office, school and division administrators, school board trustees and retired colleagues in attendance.
Lisa Baird, principal of Penhold Elementary School, noted Russell’s ongoing support for her as a school leader.
“Shawn is an important mentor who is consistent and dependable, and he believes in people,” said Baird. “While his sarcasm and humour made us laugh, it is his strong relationships that have left the biggest impact.”
Former Superintendent Kurt Sacher expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Russell.
“He is a friend and has been a trusted colleague,” said Sacher. “He always told me his opinion without undermining the work. He is intelligent, loyal and, most importantly, always considered the impact of our decisions on people.”
Russell says highlights from his time at Chinook’s Edge include centralizing technology purchasing, developing guiding principles for division calendars, supporting aspiring leaders and implementing evidence-based hiring practices.
He also helped shape administrative procedures and policies and had a direct influence on the construction or renovation of four schools within the division — leaving a lasting mark on Chinook’s Edge.
“I am grateful for my experiences in Chinook’s Edge and throughout my career,” said Russell. “I appreciate that students truly do come first in Chinook’s Edge. It’s our culture, and I’m proud to have been a part of that.”
