A teenage boy was rushed to hospital in critical condition after a utility task vehicle (UTV) collided with a semi-truck late Monday morning in the RM of Treherne.
RCMP say the crash happened just after 11 a.m. on June 23 along Highway 244 near Road 41 North. When officers arrived, they found the semi pulled over on the northbound shoulder and the UTV in the west-side ditch.
According to the initial investigation, the UTV — driven by a teen boy with another male youth as a passenger — was heading northbound when the semi moved into the passing lane to go around it. At that moment, police say the UTV made a sudden turn across the road and into the path of the semi.
The impact sent the smaller vehicle off the road. Neither youth was wearing a helmet or a seat belt.
The driver of the UTV was flown to hospital by STARS air ambulance in critical condition. The passenger was taken by EMS in serious, but non-life-threatening condition. Both have since been upgraded to stable.
The semi driver was not injured. RCMP say alcohol is not believed to have played a role.
Treherne RCMP continue to investigate with support from the Criminal Collision Investigation Team and a traffic analyst.
