The advisory, which was issued Sunday due to high flow rates following heavy rainfall, was officially lifted Tuesday morning.
“Due to improved conditions on the Bow River, the Calgary Fire Department is lifting the boating advisory issued on Sunday, June 22, effective immediately,” the department said in a news release.
Flow rates on both the Bow and Elbow rivers have since dropped below the department’s advisory threshold of 280 cubic metres per second above the Elbow River confluence. While river conditions were deemed safe for boating, officials continued to warn of cold water temperatures and reduced visibility due to lingering turbidity.
“At these levels, people can resume normal activities on the river but are encouraged to use caution,” the department said.
City officials said Calgary’s rivers are closely monitored, especially during spring and summer runoff season, when melting snow and floating debris can pose serious hazards. The department noted that even with the advisory lifted, conditions can shift rapidly—particularly during sudden thunderstorms that cause short-lived surges in flow.
Calgary Fire’s Aquatics Team is expected to continue patrolling city waterways and tracking conditions.
“All watercraft users must wear lifejackets, ensure they have the required equipment for boating, and must avoid consuming alcohol and other intoxicants on Calgary’s waterways,” the department stated.
