The Weyburn Police Service attended a local hotel last week after a report of an assault. Upon arriving, officers located a woman with significant injuries.
Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says they located the suspect on scene, who was intoxicated and resisted arrest.
“He put up a massive fight with the officers. It was a wild incident. Luckily, no officers were injured.”
St. John says it took four officers to place the man under custody, where he was then charged with multiple offences, including assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement, assault by choking, two counts of assaulting a police officer, assaulting a guard, four counts of resisting arrest, uttering death threats, and mischief under $5,000.
The man was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing on June 30th. St. John says many factors decide whether someone is held in custody including criminal history and the risk of continuing offences, however this instance was easy to determine.
“The safety of the victim is massive, and public interest is really important to keep that person remanded. They'll have a bail hearing to see if he can be released. Sometimes you're held if you plead not guilty. Until it's resolved in court, you could be held in custody.”
