The southeast will need to once again batten down the hatches as we're seeing a potentially severe thunderstorm come through the area this evening. Environment Canada's forecast expects that to hit tonight with severe weather stretching through central Saskatchewan into the southeast.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Crawford Luke guides us through what we could see from this system.

"I wouldn't say it's a guarantee that they'll all be severe, but there's definitely a chance we could see a severe storm or two in the southeast of the province around the Estevan area this evening. Main threats that we're anticipating at this time would be large hail, we're saying between 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter. Then there could also be strong, damaging winds as well, with those storms perhaps gusting over 100 kilometres an hour with the stronger storms."

The southeast is no stranger to summer storms, with a whole lot of rainfall coming down on the weekend and an even stronger system that produced tornadoes last week.

Luke says that extreme weather like tornadoes isn't something he's ruling out for the wider Saskatchewan system.

"I think it's always good to keep in mind right now we're sort of anticipating the best, the highest risk for a tornado is probably a little northwest today. So we're kind of thinking, Regina northwestwards to Saskatoon, this type of area. But I mean, certainly, severe thunderstorms, there's always a small chance they could have a tornado with them. We saw quite a few of those last week in southeastern Saskatchewan. So it's always a good thing to keep in mind, for sure."

All those winds and hail look to be blowing away any future storms in the forecast, as that's currently showing sunny skies and warm temperatures through the week.

That may end up being a mirage, as Luke says, instability may cause some more storms to form.

"It's definitely going to be warmer for the next few days, but I wouldn't be surprised if we started to see a chance for some showers or thunderstorms get introduced into that forecast as it gets updated later today, later in the week, perhaps. So yeah, chance of thunderstorms today, we might see that chance return later this week as well."

Luke reminds people that when thunder roars, go indoors, explaining that people should seek shelter if they get caught in a thunderstorm
