A passenger rail system is being planned for the province.

As part of the rail system, it will connect Fort McMurray and Grand Prairie to Edmonton, as well as Edmonton to the Calgary area, including Okotoks, and people are still able to be involved in the process.

The province is currently in the process of developing a Passenger Rail Master Plan, which had open houses happening in Calgary, Canmore, Red Deer, and Edmonton, as well as virtual sessions and an online survey where people were able to provide input on the rail line.

Now, the provincial government is hosting a provincewide virtual session on Thursday (June 26), so they can share an update on the development of the Passenger Rail Master Plan.

Through this plan, they will assess the feasibility of a passenger rail in the province, which includes regional, commuter, and high-speed services.

The provincial government is also exploring different delivery options, which include public, private, or a combination of both to create an optimal passenger rail system in Alberta.

This master plan and the 15-year delivery plan are both expected to be completed this summer, and they have a goal of informing government decisions this fall for the 2026 budget.
