The start of Frontier Days could be met with a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is tracking a system that could produce significant downpours, hail, and potentially tornadoes. The storm is expected to hit Swift Current between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said the region could experience wind gusts up to 100 km/hr and hail between two to four centimetres in size.
"We have some dry air in the southwest (part) of the province, and then we have some moisture that's being blown in from the Dakotas and Northern Plains," he said. "Where they're going to meet is around Swift Current this afternoon, and there's a bit of a boundary there that we think is going to set up to help initiate these storms."
The severe weather could include more than just strong winds, rain, and hail for the region.
"There's an outside chance of a tornado with some of these storms," he said. "Right now, we think the tornado chance is maximized a little northeast of Swift Current. So Saskatoon and kind of along Highway 11 down towards Regina."
Luke added there's a slight chance for more thunderstorms later this week that could interrupt Frontier Days.
