The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an officer-involved shooting on the Ermineskin First Nation.

On June 24, at approximately 2:28 p.m., Maskwacis RCMP responded to a residence on the Ermineskin First Nation. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 36-year-old man believed to be armed with a firearm.

RCMP say the man confronted officers, prompting at least one officer to discharge their service weapon. Officers immediately began lifesaving first aid, and EMS and STARS Air Ambulance were called to the scene. The man was flown to an Edmonton hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured during the confrontation.

RCMP said they immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated an internal review. ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding police actions during the incident.

“Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place,” RCMP said in a statement. “RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review.”

RCMP say they are fully cooperating with ASIRT.
