The Weyburn Police Service received 120 calls for service in the week of June 15th to 22nd, including a call for a domestic disturbance. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John explains that these calls can refer to a number of different scenarios.

“It is an umbrella term; it's something out of the norm. It could be a heated argument, like very heated, even if it isn't physical. That's a domestic disturbance. It could be a neighbor or a passerby walking by in the street that hears it and calls it in.”

St. John says that these calls don’t always result in charges laid, as some situations simply call for police mediation.

“It can be something a lot more severe too, of course, but it can be minor. It's something out of the ordinary that catches people's attention or scares somebody in the home. So, before it escalates further, they call us to assist with cooling things off.”

Police presence is often time enough to calm down a situation, however, St. John explains it sometimes can involve temporarily removing an involved party as well.
