Cochrane Mayor Jeff Genung says the board of the Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Parks Society (SLSRPS) has issued a statement to assure residents that it’s back to work.
The board held its first meeting on June 20 since the RFP process concluded with YMCA Calgary withdrawing its bid.
“We’ve had a lot of questions,” said Genung, who is temporarily serving as board chair. “There are tenants that have leases coming due, and everything was in limbo. Now we can give people some confidence that we’re getting back to work, and all those things will start to happen again.”

That includes Genung stepping back from the chair’s role in the near future.
The leadership change follows the retirement of long-time board president Brad Nadeau, who completed three consecutive two-year terms—the maximum allowed under the society’s bylaws.
“It was just an interim thing to let us steward this uncertain time, and we’re starting to get to the other end of that, so it’s my intention to step back,” said Genung.
He stepped in as chair after Nadeau’s departure, and Rocky View County Reeve Crystal Kissel took on the role of vice-chair.
While it’s not currently a top priority, Genung said the board will consider whether to recruit additional members. The society’s bylaws allow for a maximum of nine members on the board.
