The Town of Carberry is in the running to win a new set of bleachers and they’re counting on public support to help get them across the finish line.
Carberry is a finalist in the Ugliest Bleachers Contest, hosted by Sports Systems. The winning community will receive a full set of brand-new bleachers, with second and third place earning credits toward future purchases.
Callie Sudak, manager of joint services for Carberry, says the current bleachers are in bad shape.
“They're probably older than me,” Sudak remarks. “As you can see by the moss and everything growing on them.”
Old bleachers, new purpose
Sudak explains the bleachers were originally placed along the pool’s outer fence to give spectators a place to sit. For now, they’ve been relocated, but if Carberry wins, the new set will be installed next to a planned soccer pitch in a growing recreation area that includes a splash park and campground.
“They need a good facelift,” Sudak adds. “That little bit of facelift makes a big difference, especially when you're putting it out in a new area.”
Aptly named “One with the Earth”
The contest features submissions from across the country, and Carberry’s photo entry is titled One with the Earth. Sudak is happy to describe why it fits the name.
“Rust would be a good example,” she says. “Rotting boards, there's a lot of moss growing on what's left of the board. The grass is growing through them like crazy. They are not something you'd want to sit on, that's for sure.”
Sudak notes the community is still waiting to hear if there’s a voting deadline.
In the meantime, she encourages residents to get their votes in early.
