Penhold Firefighters celebrate tradition, community and youth as Penhold Elementary closes for the summer.

With buses lined up to take students home for the final time from Penhold Elementary School (PES) on Thursday, June 26, the Penhold Volunteer Fire Department made sure the day ended on a high note — by spraying cheering students as they left the school.

Although the origin of the year-end spray tradition is unclear, it holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Lieut. Nicole Thomson, a former PES student and now a member of the Penhold Volunteer Fire Department, fondly remembers the tradition from her own childhood.

“It was a fun time, and it’s a great tradition that has continued,” Thomson said.

Penhold’s protective services manager, Sean Pendergast, agrees.

“Members of the fire department were out last evening spraying kids as they wrapped up their soccer season, and we have two spray days planned for the community this summer,” said Pendergast.

“Traditions like this are enjoyable for the fire department and the community.”
