Garden Valley School Division (GVSD) is moving forward with a capital project at GVC TEC, following the recent closing of the roof replacement tender.

GVSD Secretary Treasurer Kevin Vovchuk shared that the division was pleased to receive word from the province that the project had been approved.

“We were thrilled to hear from the central services, the Government department, that takes care of capital projects to that we had, they first been approved we had been approved for a roof replacement at GVC TEC,” said Vovchuk.

Once a consultant was brought on board, a Request for Proposal was created and posted publicly.

“It gets put on public tendering software called Merx, and we have a number of different vendors from across the province that will look at the tender and decide if they wish to bid,” he explained.

According to Vovchuk, four submissions were received, with bids ranging from just over $600,000 to $900,000. “We have a vendor from Brandon that was the successful tender, and we're just working through some of the logistics with them,” he said. “We have to sign the final agreements and some of those details before we get too far into it, and we're looking to book a date in July for them to start.”

School year not expected to be affected

Although the division is targeting a summer construction window, there is a contingency plan in place to ensure the project does not interfere with classes.

“We're hoping to have it done by the beginning of school, but if there were some odds and sods left it… in September, we would make sure that it would not affect the beginning of the school year at GVC TEC,” Vovchuk stated.

The final project cost will be $650,000.
