Crescentview School marks the end of an era as it bids farewell to its grade 8 class moving on to high school.
On the morning of June 27, the school held a student-led assembly to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating students and hand out promotional certificates.
Principal Doyle Moar notes the importance of recognizing this milestone.
“It’s always important because it’s a next phase of life for these kids. For a lot of them, they’ve been with the same group of kids for eight years. It’s important to acknowledge that this is the next phase for them. They’re going to high school; it’s going to be different, more responsibilities, and they’re going to do a great job.”

A resilient group of students
Moar continues that the graduating class has shown resilience through many challenges over the years.
“They went through COVID, were at the MNP Building for a while, then moved to Arthur Meighen School, and back again due to restructuring. They’ve moved a lot and had to work together. They’re a really good group.”
Three students gave addresses during the assembly, including Charlz Barnachea, who has been at the school since kindergarten.
“We just thanked the teachers and we wished them good luck, basically,” commented Charlz.
He adds that receiving his promotional certificate was a proud moment mixed with nerves.
“I’m proud of myself for [this achievement], and I’m kind of nervous for high school, honestly.”
Moar also takes time to thank parents for their support throughout the students’ journey.
“Parents should take a lot of credit for what they’ve done. They’ve raised great kids who are ready for the next phase.”

Looking back on the school year
Reflecting on the year, Moar remarks it has been a strong one for the school, now in its second year as a K-to-8 institution.
“We’ve built a lot of community and culture in our building. We’ve done a lot of work with how we recognize students, our PBIS schools, our assemblies, our sports," he mentions.

New projects on the horizon
Looking ahead, Moar notes an exciting addition coming soon.
“We are going to have our basketball court. We’re going to start working on that. It’s going to go on to our playground and it’s something that our students have identified a need for since we became a K-8 school again, to have a good basketball court.”
He mentions it was a community effort to help fund the approximately $80,000 project.
Staffing updates and year-end wrap
Moar mentions there are no retirements this year, though some staff are moving on.
“We have some people that are moving on to different schools, so we’ll say goodbye to them today at lunch and they’re just moving on to a different phase of their career.”
The principal says the school is coming back with mostly the same staff, which is a positive sign.
As Crescentview students prepare to start high school this fall, the community celebrates their growth and looks forward to watching their success in the years ahead.
