After seven people were fatally injured in road-related incidents and 101 impaired drivers were removed from Alberta roads during the 2024 Canada Day long weekend, the RCMP are once again reminding motorists to plan ahead and avoid driving while impaired.

“Whether celebrating the holiday at the lake or on a patio, always remember you should never operate a motorized vehicle, including boats and OHVs, if you have been drinking or using cannabis,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “Everyone should be able to make it home safely this Canada Day. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.”

According to MADD Canada, about one in five drivers involved in fatal crashes in Alberta have consumed alcohol. For injury collisions, the figure is roughly one in 20.

RCMP say they will continue to use Mandatory Alcohol Screening to detect and deter impaired drivers. Refusing to provide a breath sample can result in criminal charges.

Drivers with a Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL) are also reminded they must abide by Alberta’s zero-tolerance law.
