Canada Day celebrations at Lake Minnewasta are well underway, and the energy is building for a day packed with family-friendly fun, lakeside vibes, and unforgettable fireworks. Morden’s annual Beach Blast is back, and this year's event promises to be one of the biggest yet.
The day started off with something new and refreshing: paddleboard yoga on the lake. “It’s the first time we’ve done it,” said Trisha Hoeppner, Events Coordinator for the City of Morden. “I think there were a lot of laughs out there! We stayed in the shallow end so everyone felt comfortable. It was just a fun, relaxing way to kick things off.”
Afternoon fun for all ages
From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Beach Blast turns the shore into a kid-friendly wonderland with a mix of classic and creative activities. Expect face painting, a scavenger hunt, and the always-popular sandcastle (or anything-you-want-to-build) competition.
“Honestly, it doesn’t have to be a castle,” said Hoeppner with a smile. “Last year, someone built this intricate town with a whole story behind it. We encourage creativity—and yes, you definitely get extra points for storytelling!”
Prizes for the sand creation contest are provided by Morden Co-op, and Canadian Tire has stepped up with giveaways for scavenger hunt participants.
“It’s just so great seeing the beach full of smiling faces and families enjoying themselves,” Hoeppner added. “The community really shows up for this day.”
Live music and lakeside vibes
As the sun dips lower, the energy picks up again. At 7:50 p.m., local dignitaries—including council member Brenda Clausen and MLA Emily Hebert—will offer a few words before the evening entertainment begins.
Morden favourites M’Ladies, one of the region’s most-loved cover bands, will take the stage to bring the beats. Whether you're dancing up front or relaxing on a blanket, it's a can't-miss performance.
“They are fantastic,” Hoeppner said. “Live music by the lake—what could be better? If you feel like dancing, go for it. If you want to just chill and enjoy, that’s great too. There’s no wrong way to take it all in.”
A sky-high finale
Of course, no Canada Day would be complete without fireworks. At dusk, Morden Fire Chief Andy Thiessen and his team will light up the sky with a dazzling display to close out the day.
“Our fire department volunteers make it happen every year,” said Hoeppner. “They’re not just setting off the fireworks—they’re also helping with traffic and keeping things safe. We’re so thankful for them.”
The fireworks are visible from almost anywhere on the beach, so bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in for the show.
One of the best days of the year
While Beach Blast may only happen once a year, its impact sticks around. For Hoeppner, the day is a reminder of what makes Canada—and Morden—so special.
“I love how diverse and beautiful our country is,” she shared. “You meet people from every walk of life, and they’re kind. That’s what I love about living here—and days like this bring that spirit to life.”
Whether you're in it for the games, the music, the fireworks, or just a great beach day, Beach Blast at Lake Minnewasta is where Morden shines brightest. Just be ready for a bit of traffic—and a whole lot of fun.
