A family-friendly event is set to celebrate the 158th birthday of Canada tomorrow afternoon with a free barbecue, cupcakes, and community activities.

The Canada Together event will begin with a ceremony that includes a Land Acknowledgment, flag raising, and a march featuring the Legion Branch 56 and local cadets.

Brad Woods, partnerships and events coordinator for the City of Swift Current, shared that the festivities kick off at noon at Memorial Park.

"We're going to do the annual flag raising ceremony with the honour guard coming in along with the dignitaries," he said. "The Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre has their designated flag raising family, who are new Canadians that are going to share in the celebration."

A table will also be set up with paper and red markers for people to share their thoughts on being Canadian or make a poster that will later be hung up around the City.

"We had a busker show up last year and was just sort of playing background music, we got a lot of positive feedback on that," Woods added. "This year we thought we'd take it to the next level, so we've got an entertainment stage and we're going to have Austin Castle and The City Limits playing throughout the afternoon."

Folks are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy the live music.
