Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for the Cochrane region as temperatures are expected to reach 29°C  tomorrow and climb into the low 30s on Wednesday. Overnight lows are forecast to remain near 14°C, offering little relief from the heat.

The sweltering conditions are expected to ease by Thursday.

Extreme heat can pose serious health risks, and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is urging residents and visitors to take precautions to protect themselves and others, especially vulnerable populations such as seniors, children, and people with chronic health conditions.

Heat exhaustion signs include headache, dizziness, nausea, intense fatigue, thirst, and dark urine. AHS advises stopping all activity and hydrating immediately if symptoms occur.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include red, hot skin, confusion, and possible loss of consciousness. If these occur, call 911 and attempt to cool the person with cold water or ice packs while waiting for help.

To stay safe:

  • Drink water regularly, even before feeling thirsty.

  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Reschedule outdoor activities to the coolest parts of the day.

  • Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

  • Never leave anyone, including pets, in a parked vehicle.

If your home is too hot, seek out public places that offer cooler indoor spaces.
