The first real heat wave in 2025 for southwestern Saskatchewan is on the way.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is projecting daytime highs in Swift Current beginning on Canada Day until at least Thursday to reach a minimum of 30 °C.
Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment Canada, said the region will be exposed to the true heat of the summer.
"Really hot weather starting to set up into southern Saskatchewan," she said. "Seeing a return of southerly flow developing over the area, late day today."
Swift Current has only reached the 30 °C mark once in 2025, on June 9, when it hit 31.7 °C.
"Other than some substantial heat in May, it's been pretty quiet (for heat)," she said.
Climenhaga added there's a bit more instability at the end of the week, would could lead to some precipitation activity.
"It looks like for Friday some showery, isolated stuff until you get into that late day Friday," she said. "More of that organization further east of you into the Manitoba area, but we will have to see, we're a little far out. You could start to see more organized precipitation Friday night into Saturday, but it's a waiting game to see how that low-pressure system develops."
