A pair of local fire departments joined forces on Canada Day to quickly extinguish a grass fire.

The Morse Fire Department were called to the fire, located north of Morse and Herbert, around 4:30 on Tuesday and used their mutual aid agreement to call in the Herbert Fire Department.

Trevor Moss, the fire chief for the Morse Fire Department, said it wasn't a big fire, but they wanted to make sure the fire was contained.

"Our main truck is up getting repairs done at the moment," he said. "We've been relying on our neighbouring departments to help us out."

The fire was initiated from a haybine, with Moss estimating about five acres were burnt.

"Damage-wise, it wasn't very much, we got on it pretty quick and snuffed it out," he said.

Eleven firefighters with three trucks responded to the fire and were on scene within 10 to 15 minutes of the call.

With the first heat warning of 2025 upon the southwest and local rural municipalities declaring states of emergencies due to the drought conditions, Moss is hopeful, this will be a one-off call.

"Now it's starting to get a little more dangerous," he said. "Guys are doing more work in the hayland and everything's kinder-dry right now."

Moss thanked the Herbert Fire Department for sending two trucks and four firefighters, adding that the main Morse fire truck should be repaired by next week.
