Nothing says summer in southern Manitoba like the return of the Morden Farmers Market. Open every Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Suncatch on 8th Street in Morden, the market is a vibrant hub of fresh produce, homemade goods, and community connection.
For longtime attendee and first-year organizer Lorna Epp, being part of the Morden Farmers Market is more than just a summer activity — it’s a celebration of local life. “The people — yeah, I love the people,” Epp shared. “It’s a nice atmosphere. We’re outside. We’re happy.”
Fresh, local, and grown with love
From crisp veggies and sun-ripened berries to handmade products and refreshing drinks, every booth at the market offers something special. “It gives the community opportunities to have some fresh fruit and farm-fresh food,” said Epp. “Not everybody has the time or space to grow it themselves, and this is such a great way to support our local growers and makers.”
Early in the season, customers can find fresh strawberries, greens, baking, and locally crafted items — with more produce rolling in as gardens flourish. “I like to go to Valley Field Acres to get fresh veggies,” Epp said. “She plants her garden earlier than I do, so her tomatoes are always ready first!”
Behind the booths: local vendors and homemade favourites
Epp herself is one of the many vendors you'll meet on-site, offering up old-fashioned lemonade and Watkins products — a line of gourmet spices, extracts, and pantry staples she’s proud to represent. “My favourites are cinnamon, black pepper, and baking vanilla,” she said. “They’ve been around since the 1850s — they’re classics.”
For those craving that perfect summer sandwich, Epp even has a go-to recipe. “I slice my fresh tomato onto homemade bread, add butter, salt, pepper, and Bothwell cheese. No mayo — me and mayo aren’t friends,” she laughed.
A market that builds community
This year’s market is organized by Epp, along with Karen Friesen from Valley Field Acres and Kayla Webb of Border Hills Honey. The trio stepped up after realizing the market needed new leadership to keep it going. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun,” Epp said. “Now that I’m organizing it, I realize just how busy it really is — but it’s so worth it.”
Shoppers can expect new vendors to pop up throughout the season, and a roadside sign on Thornhill Street — funded by the Morden Area Foundation — helps guide people straight to the action.
